Confidence and Security Building Measures with United States State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability

This session, led by the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability, reviews Confidence and Security Building Measures (CSBMs) and provides exercises applying CSBMs in fictional contexts.

Lessons Learned from Past Mediations

This session overviews the conflicts and peace processes in 5 African states: Mozambique, Uganda, Somalia, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It overviews Kenya’s mediation role in these various peace processes, the main challenges Kenyan mediators faced, and key lessons learned and best practices that can be taken from the mediation efforts of each conflict.

Drafting Peace and Ceasefire Agreements

This session overviews the core elements of peace and ceasefire agreements, the skills needed to draft proposals, and the type of language one might find in a peace or ceasefire agreement.

Gender, Women, Peace, and Security with Dr. Roisin Burke

During this session, Dr. Roisin Burke discusses Gender, Women, Peace, and Security in the context of conflict resolution, peace negotiations, and peace mediation. This session includes key definitions, the United Nations Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, and case studies in Colombia and Northern Ireland.

Mediation Process Design

This session introduces some of the key elements that must be considered when designing a mediation process that is effective and inclusive.  This session includes the design of a mediation process in the context of mediating negotiations in Sudan, in response to 9 key elements to consider when designing a mediation process.

Negotiation Skills and Substantive Topics Recap

This session provides a recap of the asynchronous and live training on negotiation skills and the common substantive topics of negotiations.

Building the Stabilization and Mediation Unit

This session introduces the essential start-up activities and core components to establish the Stabilization and Mediation Unit (SMU). During the training, this session was followed by a group discussion on key next steps and potential milestones and activities to be conducted by the SMU over the next one, five, and ten years.
